I don't think it quite qualifies as upcycling to make my old bookcase into a stained bookcase that looks completely different, but we did this project. And we are going to keep it!
The project held my preschooler's attention for a little bit as well, but was a bit stinky.
To do it, we emptied the bookcase and brought it outside, then painted with the stain like we do with regular "Daddy" paints. That means we are careful where it drips and scrub our hands when we are done.
I was intimidated by finishing this bookcase for a while (I've had it since 2001!), and it was so easy. Stinky, but easy.
