Bean Sorting Gone Bad (or Good?) - Unplugged Play

I got the "great" idea for bean sorting into muffin tins from Unplugged Play.  I think we may have started with too many beans.
  

It started out quite innocuously- a tray of beans and some muffin cups.

Then we added more and more trays, and kinds of beans. 

Then it got a bit out of control, although my child really enjoyed this activity.  Not pictured here is time spent sifting the beans through various devices to sieve them through by size.

Also not pictured is the massive clean-up effort after the various containers of beans got taken to other rooms of the house and then spilled by accident.

Maybe this would have been better as an outside activity? Or maybe with fewer beans, or fewer kinds of beans?
